For someone who is a complete novice, I think it's actually a great idea. The whole world of PnP RPGs is often misunderstood, and can be very daunting to the outsider.

Yeah, I agree with that... It is quite daunting if you've never gamed it at all before.
I just saw that book as something I never figured I'd ever see. Ever.
When I first saw "Babies for Dummies," I knew there was nothing that there wouldn't be a Dummies book for.
I bet there's even a "Assemble Your Own Nuclear Missle Defense for Dummies" out there.... ;)
